Secretary at a medical research institute

WDS-Alumnus Jeyanthram „Ram“ Venkatesan, Jahrgang 2024

While studying mechanical engineering back home in India, my primary academic interest was in the field of automobiles. An area in which Germany is renowned the world over. Therefore, I decided to pursue my master’s degree in automobile engineering halfway across the world in Rhineland-Palatinate. As admission to English-taught programs is highly competitive, I began learning German to improve my prospects. During this process, I discovered a strong interest in the language, which later influenced a change in the direction of my academic and professional development.

After an initial search online to explore different language-related career options, I came across the WDS website and made the decision to become a foreign language correspondent — something that became possible only thanks to Ms. Scharrer. When I learned that the course offered at the WDS would open up many different career opportunities, I felt truly encouraged. It gave me hope as I chose to begin a new chapter in my life focused on language.

Following the completion of my course at the WDS, I worked in an internationally active, family-owned company specializing in the production of sustainable and environmentally friendly mattresses. My responsibilities included handling customer inquiries, preparing quotations, processing orders and invoices, carrying out general administrative tasks, and coordinating transport logistics.

I am now working as a secretary at a medical research institute in Heidelberg. What I enjoy most about my job is the highly international environment. In my role, I handle administrative tasks, coordinate communication between different research teams, and assist in organizing meetings and academic events, such as conferences. On a daily basis I use the skills learned on the course to become a foreign language correspondent and I am continuing to develop these skills further in my current role. The bonus is that I truly love what I do.

Thank you, WDS, for supporting me throughout my course and for helping me achieve my goal of making the leap from a career in the field of engineering to languages, one where I can use the skills learned on the course to become a foreign language correspondent on a daily basis.
